Hydroponics Gardening

Back to Thumbnails.

This year I am attempting to start strawberries in a soil less hydroponics medium. The mother plant is in a soil made up of a combination of peat moss, perlite, potting soil and vermiculite. I got this plant in a 4" pot and put in to a 20 lt. pot right away. I used a 4 inch piece of plastic tubing to hold the plant from being blown off the rock wool medium. I use H2O2 in my solution when I am keeping plants very wet. The H2O2 has an extra oxygen molecule that is released in to the water to add oxygen to the water. For all food crops it is important to get 35 % and mix it 11 to 1 to get 3 % then add 3 ml. per lt. every solution change, that is every week.

I am still researching the many methods that allow the plant, to be kept, either dormant or growing all winter. The medium I am using on the baby strawberry is rock wool. I am told it will not buffer the solution. Once the baby is rooted it will have to cut the cord and place it in a rubber maid container. The black pot sitting in the 4 inch green pot has many holes in the sides. This allows for root development and assists the implementation of aeroponics.

Aeroponics is where the water is delivered to the root mass with what looks like tiny sprinklers. This is very good for introducing air in to the water to avoid alge and root rot. There is less contact with sunlight that can cause unwanted growth of the green alge. They will be watered for 1 minute every hour.
