Gift of Opportunity
by
Solomon Machardson
My old age
has given me leisure to count
What I have done with the days of my life
And to cherish in my heart
The gift of opportunities
That I have given to many kids.
When I think in those terms
I consider myself a mountain
Which stays in one place and follows with love
The adventures of the rivers
To which its height has given movement
The firm mountain watches
The rivers pride themselves
In breaking through the barriers
And in forgetting that but for the mountain
They might have been stagnant water.
I also watch with pride
Those I have given the opportunity
Endeavour to break through the barriers
Forgetting that but for my contribution
They might have been drawers of water.
