Death Comes For Us On Horseback

by

Richard C. Wall

death comes for us on horseback
and always knows the way
it always comes too soon
and wastes no time to stay

it journeys in the midnight hour
with a quiet promise
and finds you sleeping you hope
with a morbid solace

down the road
and past the mill
down the path
comes your kill

death comes for us on horseback
and always knows the way
It travels on a sickly steed
that's lived past its day

clitter clat down the road
its closer every second
your very heart beat in your chest
is the signal that has beckoned

it goes through your pantry
and poisons your daily bread
it creeps in your home
and snuggles in your bed

death comes for us on horseback
and always knows the way
it always comes too soon
and wastes not time to stay

fools cry and morn their death
before the day has come
and die sooner for worries' sake
before their time is done

but Death will be there soon enough
and take back what is loaned
all but a corpse belongs to death
and an epitaph in stone

death comes for us on horseback
and always knows the way
it travels on a sickly steed
that's lived past its day
