Meaning What?

by

Paul Grimsley

I meant as little to myself
As i d! id to the dictionary,
The search won't start in a thesaurus,
Where is my personal history?
My father's father evaporated
Before i fell and settled,
Just as my mother's father
Was buried in her family's memory
And locked up tight in a coffin of forgetting.
Is it in my grandfather's Ireland
Where i shall be able to understand
What someone means when they speak me?
Do i look to the faces of my family?
Pry open the heads of my friends
Or wrestle words out of their hearts
To feed my incessant quest?
Perhaps the answer is in a stranger's breast,
Shall i navigate this course through a mariner,
Who Buddha-like sits with a glittering eye?
