Mary-Ellen Grisham

The great hope in my mother's heart
Turned to sorrow when the blessing of sons
Did not bring the man to crush the serpent's head.
Misunderstanding God's future promise,
She expected more than I could be --
Even Abel missed the mark.
The humble tilling of the soil consoled me
For her disappointment and disaffection
Until the Lord favored Abel's offering over mine.
One last rejection I could not stand;
Abel's blood cries from the earth,
Bringing God's retribution.
If only I could have taken joy
In Abel's blessing -- sinless,
I might have saved us all.
The bitter anger marked me for my time
With the outcast aloneness
Of one nobody could accept and help or kill.
