An Interesting Idea - Chapter Two

by

Kimberly Canyon

“You’re supposed to be in jail,” Will said, his voice quivering.

“I was, but I escaped,” the man replied with an evil grin.

“Why do you want kill me?” Will demanded.

“I don’t want anyone to know where I am, or who I am.”

“But I won’t tell, I swear,” Will pleaded.

“Ha, I can see right through you,” the man said with a smirk, “You’d go straight to the police.” Will was silent. The man smiled, “That’s why I have to kill you.”

“No, please don’t kill me,” Will pleaded.

“It’s too late, you shouldn’t have tried to stop me,” the man said with an evil grin. Then he raised his knife. Will cried out, the pain was unbearable. He wasn’t sure what made him do it, but Will started saying that Jake would get his attacker.

“Just for that I’m going to stab you again,” the man snarled. Then Will felt a searing pain again. Suddenly the man was gone. Will was left lying on the ground gasping for breath. Now Will could only wonder whether he would live or die.

Jake pulled into the driveway. He walked into the house, ‘I wonder where Will is?’ Jake thought. Jake walked through the house calling Will’s name. Suddenly Jake froze. He felt a cold breeze on his face, his heart pounded - someone had been in the house! Jake ran towards the backyard. A horrible sight met his eyes. Will lay on the ground in front of him, barely breathing.

“Oh my god,” Jake said quietly, “Will! What happened?”

“He came back, he wanted to kill me,” Will gasped.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be okay,” Jake said as he ran back towards the house. Jake dialed 911 with shaking fingers. How could this be happening again? This guy was supposed to be in jail; how could he have escaped? What if he had been released? Most importantly, why did this crazy guy want Will dead?

Jake watched wearily as the ambulance pulled away.  Jake had already spotted the police officer coming up to him. He could tell it was going to be a long night. ‘I just hope they catch this guy,’ Jake thought angrily.

“Sir, did you see who did this?” the police officer asked.

“No, but I know who did,” Jake replied firmly.

“If you didn’t see him how do you know who it was?” the officer asked, quite puzzled.

“Because this has happened before.”

“You mean, this has happened once before?”

“Yes, that’s what I said,” Jake said irritably.

“Was anyone hurt then?”

“No.”

“I think there may be something else here, I’m not sure what it is yet, but I’m going to need your help,” the officer said sternly.

“Okay, just tell me what you want me to do,” Jake said quietly.

What kind of idiot am I? What idiot would go and try to kill their good friend? Will didn’t do anything to me, so why do I feel like I have to lash out at him?  I can’t take this pain anymore, it’s too much. How am I supposed to live without my best friend? How could he do this to me? Why couldn’t I stop him from doing it? No matter what I said or did, I couldn’t convince Joey not to kill himself. My parents must have thought I was little kid or something. I was so scared, I didn’t know what to do. Nothing worked, nothing could convince him life was worth living. Why did Joey have to take that gun and kill himself right in front of me? It’s all my fault, it’s my fault he’s dead, I should’ve been able to stop him. But I couldn’t. Who knows, maybe I should join him, maybe tonight I should just end everything. This pain is too much to deal with; no one knows how I feel. I couldn’t possibly tell my parents. My dad hates me anyway, and I couldn’t even tell Will what was going on. I know he would want to help me, but he can’t.  Sadly, no one can help me. All I want is for this pain to go away, I just want everything to end. It’s not fair, why did my friend have to die? Why couldn’t I stop him? I should’ve been able to, and it’s all my fault he’s dead.
