The Bait
by
Frank Blacharczyk
There were these two slippery weasels
looking for fish to consume,
sales reps caught like bait.
Watch your step loosen the noose for now.
Sit, don’t trip, practice your smile, no trespassing to wandering minds,
feel free to ask questions.
Humiliation is free, no hidden charges
obedience is expected or no dog treats.
The grinning weasels swam effortlessly with a story
that encircled the anxious bait, whose faces masked approval.
Escaped into another time, another place that was taken for granted,
regretfully.
The new rules hissed like freshly baked apple pie
but it tasted like crap.
Frisking for mouthwash the stunned bait stuttered questions but the weasels
frolicked with a predator’s answer.
The bait was boxed, hooked and used for their bosses’ promotion.
