The Conspiracy
by
Frances Mackay
Housework's not been the same
since electronic banking came.
Wash day holds no secret pleasure
now there's no more hidden treasure.
No cache left in his dinner suit,
no bulging pockets of hidden loot.
My 'mad money' is much depleted -
travel schemes have been defeated -
now cushions that provided plunder
have nothing left but fluff there under.
Now our kids cannot be told
the fairy tale, "From Dust to Gold."
For all the coins I once detected;
notes I found where least expected,
have vanished.
Now when cleaning up the house
there's no bonus from my spouse.
No more is there an amplitude
for my cleanliness and fortitude.
It's a conspiracy by banks, you see,
to make life hard for wives like me.
Thanks to their mean bits of plastic
my lifestyle's change is pretty drastic,
Yes, my quality of life is marred
by the chauvinist's MasterCard.
