Pink December Morning
by
David Nuffer

A pink December morning
with emerald blue mountains
cutting the empty sky.
Darkness has not lifted
from the shadows'
icy cracks, salty snow,
thin blood,
abandoned fingertips,
oxygen dealing
my left lung a seven
and my right a five
leaving the poor man's smoke.
Tan brick buildings
welcome the living
to slowly destroy hope,
a will to battle
blown away
and buried in the desert.
Pale blue darkness
returns to thwart
my best attempts
at reading
or warming.
