Shadows in the Dawn
by
Dana Ruffin

My shadow
echoes this web I weave
to carry me through the hours
in evanescent dusk and dawn
round and round my footprints
bound with iridescent seams
lifting me and stretching me
out and up in a mantle of shade
in a pool of gray haze
across the shrubbery and backs of trees
washing clean the blades of saint augustine
along my journey and trail
and for a second passing shelter
to the bee and ant hiding there
in a reflected pool of torpid air
spun and fringed in rays of light
kindred shadow lasting friend
stand by my side until our time ends
fading into the dusk of horizon
help me wade through the incoming tide
as my mind beats and lashes against me
in this hung over stage of life
