Ikeja

by

Charles Okafor

[for all who lost their lives in the events of the Ikeja bomb blasts]

We heard the sickening yell of the banshee,
And saw the chaos in your eyes spread like twilight before the funeral songs.
Ikeja, we saw the devastation that shook your being aflame
And the nightmarish voices of the dead helpless and doomed
Oh, your face was all blood
Then sunset befriended death the traitor,
And we felt the unbridled destruction in your eyes
That like a wild cyclone shook the structures that made up your face
And I was left there, weaving tears to my departed kindred.
