I Give This Day

by

Alice C. Bateman

I give this day my smile and love

I give this day my glow

'Tis given gladly, though constrained

Restricted by the blows

Of words unspoken, never said

And love gone unreturned

And greater love left unexplored

Until that love is earned

I'm so tired out

I feel so drained

Like someone pulled the plug

Or like a seashore, after tide

Sea's crumbs upon my rug

'Tis love I seek

I have no peace

Pure love does not exist

Among this race of earthbound men

They have no view of bliss

Fear not of death, my children

It is but sleep prolonged

To give us strength and harmony

That we may go beyond

To see what joy awaits us

Out there, beyond the stars

One day, if we are patient

That glory may be ours
