An Encroaching Trepidation

by

Chaya Anavi

Do you ever feel the dread
of having no life forever --
Of never growing out
of Friday nights alone --
Of never reading a book
as good as the last --
Of becoming a
jaded monotone?

It starts at the fingertips
Then progresses up the arms,
From there creeps down the spine
And in a swift leap
Is at your toes --
That dreadful fear
Of living life alone.
We don't even know it's there
Until it's knocking on our doors.

Let us not stop to reflect
the opportunities passing by.
It is not to any aid
to brood o'er roads taken.
The choices have been made --
Let us leave them as forsaken.
New ones will be met and laid
Not if you stay in rejection.
Do you ever appeal to deception
to gain relief in seclusion?

What if you wake up old
or with a case of lassitude --
If you never step outside again,
If you never leave this room --
If every program on tv
becomes the same rerun --
Worse yet, what if
you wake up alone?

It starts at the fingertips
Then progresses up the arms,
From there creeps down the spine
And in a swift leap
Is at your toes --
That dreadful fear
Of living life alone.
We don't even know it's there
Until it's knocking on our doors.

Intend to make the very best
of each and every day.
We never know where life will lead
or what it might become...
Let us risk security
on some impetuous bet.
Even if we lose the trophy,
At least we'll have some fun.
Do you ever see the ticket master
to life offering you none?

Have you ever missed the bus
and been left stranded on the street --
Ever thought about failing
a course and never graduating --
Or living the same day over forever
and being stuck in time --
Have you ever foreseen life
leaving you behind?

It starts at the fingertips
Then progresses up the arms,
From there creeps down the spine
And in a swift leap
Is at your toes --
That dreadful fear
Of living life alone.
We don't even know it's there
Until it's knocking on our doors.
